The city where the Gymnasium place has to be earned twice
Most German states decide secondary school once, after year 4, and then leave families alone. Hamburg decides twice. The transfer at ten is genuinely free β the primary school's recommendation is not binding and there is no grade threshold β but years 5 and 6 at a Gymnasium are a formal Beobachtungsstufe, and a child who cannot hold the pace moves to a Stadtteilschule at the end of year 6. Add a Gymnasium route that is still eight years long after the 2024 G9 petition failed, and Hamburg parents are working to a tighter clock than almost anywhere else in the country. Beobachtungsstufe, taken seriously
Years 5 and 6 are the highest-stakes two years in Hamburg schooling and almost nobody tutors for them properly. The work is rarely dramatic: German reading stamina, mathematics fluency, and the study habits a Gymnasium assumes and never teaches. Started in year 5, it is a session a week. Started in March of year 6, it is a rescue.
The IB, in the state system as well
Hamburg is unusual: alongside the International School of Hamburg, two state Gymnasien β Helene-Lange in EimsbΓΌttel and Hansa-Gymnasium in Bergedorf β are authorised to run the IB Diploma. Hamburg abolished the Realschule and the Hauptschule and runs just two secondary forms, which sounds simpler than it is. These are the four moments that decide a school career here β and what a tutor actually has to know for each.

A Diploma or MYP student at the International School of Hamburg in Osdorf, or an IGCSE cohort heading for a British-curriculum sixth form. You need someone who knows the board, the Internal Assessment deadlines and the command terms β and who teaches in English.
Hamburg Abitur families
The Profiloberstufe has gone wrong in one subject and the Gesamtqualifikation is already banking points. We work to Hamburg's own papers and its April window, and because coursework carries two-thirds of the 900 points, the repair starts long before the written exams do.

Hamburg's maritime, logistics and consulting employers move families in and out mid-year. A transfer into the Hamburg system, or out of it into the IB, means two curricula, two languages and usually about eight weeks to bridge them.

Hamburg has a smaller international sector than Berlin or Frankfurt, and a more interesting one: two of the IB Diploma schools here are ordinary state Gymnasien. These are the schools our students actually attend, with the programmes each genuinely offers.
What your IB score is actually worth in Germany
Hamburg Diploma students β at ISH, at Helene-Lange or at Hansa-Gymnasium β nearly all apply to at least one German university, and the same wrong number circulates every year: that a particular university "wants 38 points". No German university publishes an IB cut-off. The system does not work that way, and anyone quoting you one has invented it. Here is what actually happens.

A single grade 3 can be compensated by a 5 or better in another subject at the same or higher level, provided the total still reaches 24. The subject combination matters more than the headline number: at least one of the three Higher Level subjects must be a language, mathematics or a science, and taking mathematics only at Standard Level can restrict a student to subject-bound admission rather than general university entrance β a Year 11 decision that quietly closes doors in Year 13.
Why there is no published cut-off
German universities do not set an IB threshold. For oversubscribed subjects they rank every applicant by converted grade average and admit downwards until the places are gone β the grade of the last student admitted becomes that semester's Numerus Clausus. It is a result, not a requirement, and it moves every single intake. The universities that publish previous years' figures attach an explicit warning against using them to predict anything.
Applicants holding a foreign-acquired qualification are handled separately again β the Abiturbestenquote is split into sixteen Land quotas, and holders of a foreign qualification are allocated to one of them by lot. So the honest answer to "what score do I need" is: the highest one your child can reasonably reach, because the bar is set by whoever else applies that year.
What we can tell you is where the leverage sits. Two points is a third of a grade, and points are far easier to add in Year 12 than in the last eight weeks of Year 13 β which is why we push families to start the Diploma years with support rather than rescue them at the end of it.

Why Hamburg is a different tutoring problem from Berlin or Munich
