There are two Frankfurts, academically speaking. One sits IB and IGCSE papers set abroad and worries about Internal Assessment deadlines. The other sits the Hessen Landesabitur, in a state that β uniquely β lets each individual Gymnasium choose between G8 and G9, so two children the same age in neighbouring Stadtteile can be a whole year apart. A tutor who knows the subject but not which of those two worlds your child lives in will be pleasant, expensive and beside the point. Both systems, one team
Metropolitan runs IGCSE into the Diploma. ISF runs IGCSE into the Diploma and AP. FIS runs PYP straight into the DP with no MYP at all. The Hessen school system, decoded by stage
Hessen does several things differently from the states either side of it, and two of them catch Frankfurt families out every year. These are the four moments that decide a school career here β and what a tutor actually has to know for each.

Who we tutor across Frankfurt
Four Frankfurt households, one shared problem: the class moves at the pace of twenty-five children, and yours needs it to move at the pace of one.
International-school families
A Diploma candidate at FIS Oberursel, an IGCSE cohort at Metropolitan or ISF, an MYP student at Strothoff. You need someone who knows the board, the Internal Assessment deadlines and the command terms β and who teaches in English. Most of the agencies chasing this cohort are online-only and based in London; ours will come to Oberursel on a Wednesday evening.
Hessen Gymnasium families
The Oberstufe has gone wrong in one Leistungskurs and the Gesamtqualifikation is already banking points. We work to Hessen's own papers, its Erwartungshorizont and its April exam window β not a generic German average. And because coursework carries two-thirds of the 900 points, the repair work starts long before the written papers do.
Relocating and returning families
Frankfurt turns over faster than almost any German city. A move into the Hessen system mid-year, or out of it into an international school, means two curricula, two languages and usually about eight weeks to bridge them. We start with a diagnostic against the new syllabus rather than the old report card.
Bilingual and European-school families
Children at the EuropΓ€ische Schule Frankfurt or in Bad Vilbel work towards the European Baccalaureate; those at Obermayr or Phorms work towards a bilingual Abitur. Both need subject help in the right language, not language help in the right subject β and the European Baccalaureate has almost no tutoring market of its own.

What your IB score is actually worth in Germany
Frankfurt sends more students from the IB into the German university system than any city except Berlin, and the same wrong number circulates every year: that a particular university "wants 38 points". No German university publishes an IB cut-off β the system does not work that way, and anyone quoting you one has invented it. Here is what actually happens.

What Germany actually requires

A single grade 3 can be compensated by a 5 or better in another subject at the same or higher level, provided the total still reaches 24. The subject combination matters more than the headline number: at least one of the three Higher Level subjects must be a language, mathematics or a science, and taking mathematics only at Standard Level can restrict a student to subject-bound admission rather than general university entrance β a Year 11 decision that quietly closes doors in Year 13.
Why there is no published cut-off
German universities do not set an IB threshold. For oversubscribed subjects they rank every applicant by converted grade average and admit downwards until the places are gone β the grade of the last student admitted becomes that semester's Numerus Clausus. It is a result, not a requirement, and it moves every single intake. The universities that publish previous years' figures attach an explicit warning against using them to predict anything.
Applicants holding a foreign-acquired qualification are handled separately again β the Abiturbestenquote is split into sixteen Land quotas, and holders of a foreign qualification are allocated to one of them by lot. So the honest answer to "what score do I need" is: the highest one your child can reasonably reach, because the bar is set by whoever else applies that year.
What we can tell you is where the leverage sits. Two points is a third of a grade, and points are far easier to add in Year 12 than in the last eight weeks of Year 13 β which is why we push families to start the Diploma years with support rather than rescue them at the end of it.

Why Frankfurt is different from every other German city we cover
Fourteen international, European and bilingual schools sit inside the Rhein-Main area β more than any German city except Berlin β and they do not run a common curriculum. Frankfurt International School goes PYP straight into the Diploma without an MYP. Metropolitan runs IGCSE into the Diploma. ISF Sindlingen adds AP. Strothoff runs the full PYPβMYPβDP continuum. The European Schools in Praunheim and Bad Vilbel work towards the European Baccalaureate, which is not an IB qualification at all. Layered underneath is the Hessen state system, where each individual Gymnasium chooses G8 or G9 for itself, so year groups are not comparable even between neighbouring districts. The tutoring market here has mostly responded by picking one side and ignoring the other. The German Nachhilfe chains cover the Landesabitur, in German, on multi-year agreements. The international agencies cover the IB, online only, and do not touch the Abitur. We cover both, in English or German, at your kitchen table.
