ISD Kaiserswerth, Cologne International School and Bonn International School all run PYP into MYP into the Diploma. That is three genuinely different marking regimes in one school career, and the MYP's criterion marking is the one families understand least. We assign per programme, not per subject label.
IGCSE into the Diploma — not A-Level
Both St. George's campuses here, and ISR in Neuss, run IGCSE and then the IB Diploma. They are routinely listed online as A-Level schools; they are not. Getting that wrong means preparing a student for the wrong mark scheme for two years, which is exactly the kind of error the assignment step exists to prevent.
NRW Abitur, on NRW's own timetable
North Rhine-Westphalia's first regular G9 cohort sits the Abitur in 2027, which makes 2026 an unusually thin transition year at Gymnasien. We plan the runway backwards from the published Zentralabitur windows rather than from a national average.

St. George's Düsseldorf Rhein-Ruhr in Duisburg, St. George's Cologne and ISR in Neuss all run IGCSE and then the IB Diploma. The two years in between are where exam technique is built — or quietly is not, and the switch from IGCSE grading to IB criterion marking catches out more students than the content does.
NRW Gymnasium and Gesamtschule families
The Oberstufe has gone wrong in one Leistungskurs and Block I is already banking points. We work to NRW's own papers and its April window — and to the right year, because the G8-to-G9 switch means two adjacent cohorts are on different runways.
Internationally posted families
Düsseldorf hosts around 410 Japanese companies and more than 15,000 Japanese residents, the largest such community in Germany, alongside a large diplomatic presence in Bonn. Postings move families mid-year, in and out of curricula, usually with about eight weeks to bridge them.

What your IB score is actually worth in Germany
Most Diploma students in this corridor apply to at least one German university, and the same wrong number circulates every year: that a particular university "wants 38 points". No German university publishes an IB cut-off — the system does not work that way, and anyone quoting you one has invented it. Here is what actually happens.

A single grade 3 can be compensated by a 5 or better in another subject at the same or higher level, provided the total still reaches 24. The subject combination matters more than the headline number: at least one of the three Higher Level subjects must be a language, mathematics or a science, and taking mathematics only at Standard Level can restrict a student to subject-bound admission rather than general university entrance — a Year 11 decision that quietly closes doors in Year 13.
Why there is no published cut-off
German universities do not set an IB threshold. For oversubscribed subjects they rank every applicant by converted grade average and admit downwards until the places are gone — the grade of the last student admitted becomes that semester's Numerus Clausus. It is a result, not a requirement, and it moves every single intake. The universities that publish previous years' figures attach an explicit warning against using them to predict anything.
Applicants holding a foreign-acquired qualification are handled separately again — the Abiturbestenquote is split into sixteen Land quotas, and holders of a foreign qualification are allocated to one of them by lot. So the honest answer to "what score do I need" is: the highest one your child can reasonably reach, because the bar is set by whoever else applies that year.
What we can tell you is where the leverage sits. Two points is a third of a grade, and points are far easier to add in Year 12 than in the last eight weeks of Year 13 — which is why we push families to start the Diploma years with support rather than rescue them at the end of it.

Why we did not build three separate city pages
Because the schools do not sit in three separate markets. Thirty-three kilometres and roughly twenty-six minutes of track separate Düsseldorf and Cologne; Bonn is another half hour beyond that, with more than forty services a day. Families here genuinely live in one city and school in another, and the leading international-school database lists all nine schools under a single Düsseldorf–Cologne–Bonn heading. Splitting them would have produced three thin pages competing with each other for the same handful of searches, and would have told you nothing about how the schools relate. What matters is the tutor pool, and that pool covers the whole corridor without a travel surcharge.
The correction almost every family here needs
The St. George's schools — Düsseldorf Rhein-Ruhr on the Duisburg campus, and Cologne — are described online as A-Level schools with some regularity. They are not. Both run the English National Curriculum through IGCSE and then the IB Diploma and the IB Career-related Programme. ISR in Neuss is the same shape: IGCSE, then the Diploma. Meanwhile ISD Kaiserswerth, Cologne International School and Bonn International School run the full IB continuum from the Primary Years Programme through the MYP to the Diploma — three different marking regimes across one school career, of which the MYP's criterion grading is the one families understand least and worry about most. Getting this wrong means two years of preparing against the wrong mark scheme. It is the reason we assign tutors rather than hand you a directory.
NRW is mid-transition, and your child's year group matters
North Rhine-Westphalia has returned its Gymnasien to a nine-year route, and the first regular G9 cohort sits the Abitur in 2027. That makes 2026 an unusual, unusually small examination year at Gymnasien. The written Zentralabitur windows are 16 April to 8 May in 2026 and 13 April to 5 May in 2027, and the Abitur itself remains a 900-point Gesamtqualifikation — up to 600 points from the Qualifikationsphase and up to 300 from four examinations, of which the first two are the Leistungskurse. Because coursework carries two-thirds of the total, useful intervention starts long before the written papers do.
