Four physics courses, four different jobs
The physics tutoring market in Germany is a directory market. Search for a physics tutor here and you get marketplaces listing dozens of individuals, sorted by price, with no way to tell whether any of them has ever marked an IB Scientific Investigation or a Physik Erwartungshorizont. What almost none of those pages do is explain how the four physics courses taught in this country actually differ β which is the one thing that determines whether an hour of tutoring is worth buying. So this page does that first, and sells second.
Assigned by syllabus, not by subject
A tutor who can teach "physics" is not the same as a tutor who knows that Cambridge IGCSE Core candidates sit Papers 1 and 3 and cannot score above a C, or that the IB's 2025 syllabus reorganised everything into five themes, or that Edexcel has no practical paper at all. We assign against the specification your child is examined on, and we ask which one it is in the first message rather than the third session.
The coursework nobody prepares for
The IB Scientific Investigation is 20% of the physics grade at both levels and is worth more than any single topic. Cambridge candidates sit either a practical exam or the Alternative to Practical paper, and which one is a school decision. UK-board A-Level physics carries a practical endorsement reported separately from the grade. We work on all of it, and we never write it.
Physics failures are usually maths failures
Most students who say they cannot do physics can do the physics. What they cannot do is rearrange under time pressure, carry units through three steps, or read a gradient off a graph they drew themselves. IB Diploma physics students
SL or HL, with the Scientific Investigation somewhere on the horizon and Paper 1B data questions eating marks. The 20% coursework weighting means the single highest-value hours of the two years are usually spent on the investigation design, months before it is due.
IGCSE and A-Level students
Cambridge or Edexcel, and the difference matters β tiering, practical papers and the endorsement all work differently between them. Transfers between boards mid-course are common in Germany and are where most of the damage happens.
Abitur students taking Physik
Leistungskurs or Grundkurs, with Klausur results feeding Block I of a 900-point total for two years before anyone sits a written Abitur paper. A weak Halbjahr is a permanent deduction from a total still being accumulated, so it is worth fixing in the term it happens rather than in the final revision period.
Students who have decided they are bad at physics
Usually not true, and usually an algebra or a units problem wearing a physics costume. The first session is a diagnosis rather than a lesson, and it is refundable in full if it does not land.

The five places students lose physics marks
Drawn from what our tutors see in first diagnostic sessions rather than from a syllabus index β because the topic a student names is rarely the topic that is failing.
Algebra under time pressure
The physics is understood; the rearrangement is not. A student who can state that F equals ma and still cannot get a out of it in nine seconds will lose marks across every topic at once. This is the single most common diagnosis we make, and the fastest to fix β usually a few weeks of drill rather than a term of physics.
Units, prefixes and orders of magnitude
Millimetres entered as metres, kilojoules as joules, an answer three orders of magnitude out and left unquestioned. Examiners award method marks generously and final-answer marks not at all, so this costs far more than it should β and it is invisible in class, because the working looks right.
Graphs the student drew themselves
Reading a gradient, an intercept or an area under a curve β and knowing which of the three the question wants. This appears in IB Paper 1B data-based questions, in IGCSE practical papers and in Abitur Auswertungsaufgaben alike, and it is taught properly almost nowhere.
The extended-response question
Six marks for an explanation, and a student writes two sentences that repeat the question. Command terms β explain, describe, justify, deduce β each demand a specific shape of answer, and the mark scheme is unusually literal about it. In German the Operatoren do exactly the same job, are published by the state, and are just as rarely taught.
What your IB score is worth in Germany
Physics is one of the subjects the KMK counts explicitly: an IB Diploma is recognised for German university entry only if it includes a science, and taking mathematics at Standard Level can restrict a student to subject-bound admission that excludes the mathematical, scientific and technical fields. For a physics student intending to study in Germany, the subject combination is not a detail. Here is what the score converts to.

A single grade 3 can be compensated by a 5 or better in another subject at the same or higher level, provided the total still reaches 24. The subject combination matters more than the headline number: at least one of the three Higher Level subjects must be a language, mathematics or a science, and taking mathematics only at Standard Level can restrict a student to subject-bound admission rather than general university entrance β a Year 11 decision that quietly closes doors in Year 13.
Why there is no published cut-off
German universities do not set an IB threshold. For oversubscribed subjects they rank every applicant by converted grade average and admit downwards until the places are gone β the grade of the last student admitted becomes that semester's Numerus Clausus. It is a result, not a requirement, and it moves every single intake. The universities that publish previous years' figures attach an explicit warning against using them to predict anything.
Applicants holding a foreign-acquired qualification are handled separately again β the Abiturbestenquote is split into sixteen Land quotas, and holders of a foreign qualification are allocated to one of them by lot. So the honest answer to "what score do I need" is: the highest one your child can reasonably reach, because the bar is set by whoever else applies that year.
What we can tell you is where the leverage sits. Two points is a third of a grade, and points are far easier to add in Year 12 than in the last eight weeks of Year 13 β which is why we push families to start the Diploma years with support rather than rescue them at the end of it.

Not one of the pages currently ranking for this term explains how IB Physics differs from IGCSE physics, or what the Alternative to Practical paper is, or why a Cambridge Core entry caps a student at a C. Those are the facts that determine whether an hour of tutoring is worth buying, so we have put them above, with the numbers taken from each awarding body's own current specification. The 20% almost nobody plans for
Under the IB syllabus first assessed in 2025, the Scientific Investigation is worth 20% of the physics grade at both Standard and Higher Level β a single internally assessed report of up to 3,000 words. It is worth more than any individual theme on the syllabus, it is written months before the examinations, and it is very frequently left until it is too late to design properly. The highest-value tutoring hours of the entire two-year course are usually the ones spent choosing a research question that can actually produce data and thinking about uncertainties before the experiment rather than after it. We help with all of that. We do not write it, and no reputable tutor will.
Physics in the Abitur is a two-year accumulation, not an exam
Physik taught as a Leistungskurs runs five hours a week in North Rhine-Westphalia against three for a Grundkurs, and its Klausur results feed Block I of the 900-point Gesamtqualifikation for two years before anyone sits an AbiturprΓΌfung. Block I carries up to 600 of those 900 points; the four final examinations carry 300. So a weak Halbjahr in a Physik Leistungskurs is a permanent deduction from a total the student is still accumulating β which is an argument for fixing it in the term it happens rather than in the revision period. Hours and course structures vary between the sixteen states; we plan against yours.
