IGCSE is deceptive. The content is not the hard part — plenty of students who understand the material still open the paper and lose twelve marks to the difference between state, describe and explain. Two years of work is settled by a handful of externally marked papers in one May, against a mark scheme almost nobody outside the exam hall has actually read. A free trial lesson is a promise that expires exactly when it starts to matter. IGCSE families do not need protecting in September — they need it in the fortnight before the papers, when there is no time left to fix a bad assignment. So ours never expires. IGCSE is the quieter of Switzerland's international curricula — fewer schools run it than the IB, and they are scattered across the cantons rather than clustered around Zürich. These are the programmes behind the school names, and the ones we assign IGCSE tutors against.

Most of the marks we recover for IGCSE students in Switzerland were never lost to a failure of understanding. They were lost to a student who wrote a fine paragraph in answer to state, who reached the right number with no working on a four-mark question, who ran out of time on Paper 4 because the first three questions were done beautifully and slowly, or who was entered for Core in Year 10 by a teacher being sensible and has been capped ever since. None of that is fixed by more content. It is fixed by a tutor putting the published mark scheme on the table next to the script and going through it question by question until the student can see the marks as clearly as the examiner does.
