The Middle Years Programme is the stage nobody warns you about. There is no percentage to watch, no obvious pass mark and no exam at the end of most years — just four criteria per subject, each scored out of eight, against descriptors written in language that means something very precise to an examiner and almost nothing to a parent. A bright child can write a good essay and still score a 4, because the task asked them to evaluate and they described. The MYP is a five-year programme, which is a long time to be paying for hours nobody is measuring. Most tutoring companies protect you for one trial lesson, then the risk quietly becomes yours. Ours never moves: if a session falls short in MYP 2 or eight weeks before the Personal Project deadline, the student asks and it is refunded in full — no conditions, no approval, no awkward conversation.
The 1.5-hour structure holds whether your child is stuck on MYP 2 algebra in Zug or drafting a Personal Project report in MYP 5 — read the criterion, teach the gap, then produce something that would actually score.
The Middle Years Programme is taught as eight subject groups plus interdisciplinary learning, and each one is assessed against its own four criteria. Rundil assigns against the group, not the vague subject name — because MYP Sciences criterion B is not MYP Mathematics criterion B, and treating them as one thing is how hours get wasted.
Every MYP subject is marked against four criteria, A to D, each scored from 0 to 8. The four scores are added to a criterion levels total out of 32, and that total converts to the final subject grade on the 1 to 7 scale using the IB’s published general grade boundaries: 28–32 is a 7, 24–27 a 6, 19–23 a 5, 15–18 a 4, 10–14 a 3, 6–9 a 2 and 1–5 a 1. There is no percentage anywhere in that chain, and no raw mark per paper — which is exactly why a report saying “5 in Sciences” tells a parent so little on its own.

Approaches to Learning, or ATL, are the five skill clusters the Middle Years Programme deliberately teaches alongside subject content: thinking, research, communication, social and self-management. They are not a soft extra. They are the thing criteria B, C and D reward in almost every subject group, and they are the reason a capable child can know the material and still be marked at a 4. Most of what a good MYP tutor does is ATL work wearing a subject’s clothes.
Critical, creative and transfer thinking — the engine of criterion D almost everywhere. This is where evaluate, justify and to what extent live, and where describing a correct answer still scores badly.
Finding, judging and crediting sources — criterion B in Individuals and Societies and in Design, and the whole spine of the Personal Project. Referencing is assessed, not administrative.
Criterion C in most subject groups is literally called Communicating. Structure, notation, terminology, register and audience — the marks a strong student most often leaves on the table.
Collaboration, negotiation and shared accountability — assessed directly in group tasks, in Interdisciplinary Units and across the Community Project in MYP 3 and MYP 4.
Organisation, affective skills and reflection. Deadlines, process journals and the reflective writing that carries real marks in Design, the Arts and the Personal Project — not a wellbeing footnote.
Never as a standalone lesson. The tutor takes the marked task your child already has, names which ATL cluster the lost strand belongs to, and rebuilds that piece of work with the skill attached to real content — so it transfers to the next unit rather than to a worksheet.

This is the question we are asked more than any other, and the honest answer is that MYP grades do not predict Diploma grades. The programmes measure different things. MYP marks four criteria against descriptors across a whole term; the Diploma marks summative performance against a syllabus, with an Internal Assessment and an Extended Essay attached to it. A child sitting comfortably on 6s in MYP 5 can meet DP Year 1 and find that the criteria they learned to read have been replaced by mark schemes, and that nobody is handing them the descriptor in advance any more. What does carry across is the ATL work — the research, the referencing, the structure and the self-management. Which is why the MYP 4 and MYP 5 tutoring we do is deliberately built to survive the handover, and why the same tutor can often stay with a student straight through into the Diploma.
The MYP sits behind more Swiss school names than most families realise, and it rarely appears on the report card by name. These are the programmes published by schools across the country — and the ones we assign tutors against.
