English tutoring in Germany, at a glance

In short

Rundil assigns a degree-qualified English specialist for the exact paper your child sits — Abitur Englisch LK or GK, IGCSE English, IB English A or B — usually within 48 to 72 hours, at home or online for one price, from €68 an hour, no VAT added, no contract. 95% of the students who joined us before September achieved their target grades by May.

Now the part almost nobody says out loud: a child who speaks fluent English can still lose marks in Englisch. The paper is not marking how well your child speaks. It marks textual analysis, register, essay architecture and whether the answer did what the Operator instructed — analyse is not discuss, and comment on is not outline. Add Sprachmittlung, the German mediation task that exists in almost no other system, and a bilingual fifteen-year-old can sit in an Englisch Leistungskurs quietly collecting nines while everyone assumes the subject is a free ride.

English is examined in three parallel systems in this country at once: the Abitur, the international-school boards, and the certificates universities and employers ask for afterwards. We tutor all three, and we will tell you plainly which one is actually deciding your child's next step. There is no subscription, no registration fee and nothing to cancel — you pay per completed hour, and we carry the risk that the hour was worth it.

Why families choose Rundil

Why families choose Rundil for English tutoring in Germany

English is examined at a high level in three different systems in this country simultaneously, and almost no provider covers more than one of them. The German system marks Englisch as a literary and analytical subject with its own command vocabulary and its own mediation task. The international schools mark it as First Language, Second Language, Literature, Language A or Language B — five genuinely different qualifications wearing the same word. And then IELTS, TOEFL and the Cambridge certificates measure something different again. A tutor who only knows one of the three will be pleasant and largely useless for the other two.

We teach the mark scheme, not the language

Your child is not being marked on vocabulary. They are being marked on whether an analyse task got analysis, whether the register fits the text type, and whether the argument is built rather than listed. That is what the sessions drill, against your school's own Erwartungshorizont or the board's mark scheme.

Sprachmittlung, taught properly

Mediation is the task that separates German English papers from every other English exam on earth, and it is the one most private tutors skip because they have never sat one. It is not translation. We teach the selection, the summarising and the register shift it actually asks for, on real past tasks.

Refundable, every single session

English is the subject parents feel least able to judge from the outside, which is exactly why the guarantee matters here. If a session falls short, the student says so and it is refunded in full — any session, all year, no conditions and no approval process.

At home or online, one price

English tutoring travels well: a text on a shared screen works exactly as it does on a kitchen table. So we charge €58, €68 or €83 either way, with no Hausbesuch surcharge, and you can switch format week to week without the price moving.

The people who teach

Four of the tutors who teach for us in Germany

A sample, not the roster. You are not choosing from these four — they are here so you can see the standard we assign to. Each covers a narrow field properly rather than five approximately, and each teaches at home in their own city and online anywhere in Germany at exactly the same rate.

Dr Anna Weber, IB and MYP tutor for maths, biology and chemistry in Berlin — Rundil tutoring Germany

Dr Anna Weber

IB & MYP Tutor — Maths, Biology & Chemistry · Berlin

PhD Molecular Biology · MEd Education · at-home in Berlin, online across Germany

Dr Anna Weber is an experienced international-school tutor specialising in the IB Diploma Programme and Middle Years Programme. She holds a PhD in Molecular Biology and a Master's degree in Education, combining strong subject expertise with a clear understanding of how students learn. Anna supports MYP students with developing solid foundations in mathematics and science, as well as IB Diploma students preparing for internal assessments, examinations and extended written work. She is not an English-subject tutor, but she is often assigned to students whose science marks are being held back by their written English, because scientific writing in a second language is a genuine and separate obstacle. Her lessons are carefully structured around the student's syllabus, current challenges and academic goals. Anna's calm and encouraging approach helps students become more confident, organised and independent. Available for at-home tutoring in Berlin and online lessons throughout Germany.

James Bennett

MSc Mechanical Engineering · at-home in Munich, online across Germany

James Bennett is a degree-qualified Mathematics and Physics tutor with extensive experience supporting students following IGCSE and A-Level programmes. Maths and Physics are his subjects, and he says so plainly — families who need English are assigned to an English specialist instead. He is especially effective with students who understand classroom explanations but struggle to apply their knowledge independently under exam conditions. Available for at-home tutoring in Munich and online lessons throughout Germany.

Katharina, Daniel, Anna and James are four of the tutors who teach for us in Germany — shown so you can see the standard, not so you can pick from a shortlist. The right tutor for your child may well be none of them. Note that two of the four are not English tutors at all, and we would rather say that than dress a physicist up as a literature specialist. Every tutor is individually interviewed, background-checked and assigned only to the curricula they actually teach, and you are never asked to browse profiles and guess: tell us the Bundesland or exam board, the paper and the year group, and we assign the specialist, typically within 48 to 72 hours. At-home and online sessions cost exactly the same, and you can switch between them at any time.

The Rundil difference

Every English session is refundable. Every single one.

English is the subject where a parent can sit in the next room and genuinely not know whether the hour was any good. Nobody can hear an essay improving. The market's answer to that is a free trial — two Probestunden, or a 30-day window — after which the risk quietly becomes yours for the remaining twenty-two months of the agreement. Ours never moves. If a session falls short on any given Tuesday in March, the student asks and it is refunded in full: no conditions, no approval, no awkward conversation with the tutor.

95%
of students who joined us before September achieved their target grades by May — in Germany and Switzerland alike. In Englisch that usually means the jump from a passable answer to one that actually does what the Operator asked. The promise below is what protects you if your child is in the 5%.
No conditions, no trial-only window
The guarantee covers every session all year, not a Probestunde designed to expire in week two.
Wrong specialism? We reassign
A Literature tutor is not an IELTS tutor. If the fit is off, say so and we assign a different one at no cost.
Free cancellation until 17:00
Move or cancel any session until 17:00 the day before, at no charge whatsoever.

What happens in an English tutoring session

An English session is not a conversation and it is not a vocabulary drill. It is ninety real minutes in which a text is taken apart, an answer is built to the command term, and the student writes something that gets marked before they leave. The shape holds whether the paper is an Englisch Klausur in Hamburg or IB English A Paper 1 in Frankfurt.

Tutor and student analysing a text during an English tutoring session in Germany for Abitur Englisch and IB English

Read the last marked paper

  • Where did the marks actually go — content, language or task?
  • Was the Operator obeyed, or answered with something adjacent?
  • Is the register wrong for the text type being asked for?
  • Separate what is a language gap from what is a technique gap

Take one text apart

  • Model the analysis out loud, then hand it over
  • Name the devices and say what each one does
  • Build the paragraph: claim, evidence, effect, link
  • Drill Sprachmittlung or the Individual Oral where it applies

Write it under the clock

  • A real past task, at real exam length
  • Marked to the Erwartungshorizont or board mark scheme
  • Timed, because most English marks are lost to the clock
  • Student writes one answer unaided before the end

Where Englisch is examined in the German system

English is not a subject that only matters at the end. It is the first foreign language for almost every pupil in Germany, it is one of the three written papers at the Mittlerer Schulabschluss, and it is examined again in the Abitur. These are the four points where it counts, and what a tutor has to know at each one.

StageWhenWhat Englisch is actually testing thereHow we prepare for it
Abitur EnglischMost requestedEnds grade 12 (G8) or 13 (G9)A text task at the centre — comprehension, analysis and a comment or Erörterung — which the KMK allows to be supplemented by up to two of a Sprachmittlung task, a listening or viewing task, and an oral component. Both Leistungskurs and Grundkurs are pitched across a band between CEFR B2 and C1; the difference is depth, autonomy and time, not a different language level.Operatoren discipline, register control and timed past papers in your own state's format — plus Sprachmittlung, drilled separately because it is scored separately.
Englisch in the MSAEnd of grade 10Englisch is one of the three compulsory written papers alongside Deutsch and Mathematik, usually with an oral or listening component, and the format is set by each Land. It is the gateway to the Fachoberschule and the Fachhochschulreife route.Closing the gaps quietly carried from grades 7 to 9, then full past-paper cycles with the listening component practised at real speed.
The first foreign languagePrimary into lower secondaryEnglish is the erste Fremdsprache for the overwhelming majority of German pupils, and its grade starts carrying weight earlier than parents expect. Berlin applies a rule from the 2026 school year under which a pupil may not exceed 14 grade points combined across German, Mathematics and the first foreign language to enter a Gymnasium directly.Fixing the foundations — tenses, word order, reading stamina — while the stakes are still low enough that fixing them is cheap.
G8 vs G9 in 2026Varies by stateCohort size and exam timing, not content: Bavaria's first regular G9 cohort sits the Abitur in 2026, North Rhine-Westphalia's first G9 Abitur follows in 2027, and Rhineland-Palatinate runs parallel G8 and G9 tracks with different written-exam windows. For Englisch it means one more Kurshalbjahr of marks feeding the Gesamtqualifikation in the G9 states. We plan the Englisch revision runway backwards from your own state's actual 2026 or 2027 dates, not from a national average.
Sprachmittlung is worth checking before anything else. Where a state sets it as a separate part of the written paper, it can carry a serious share of the mark — in Berlin and Brandenburg the mediation task is weighted at 30% of the written Englisch Abitur and given a fixed 60 minutes, on top of 195 minutes for the Grundkurs writing task or 225 for the Leistungskurs. A student who has never been taught it properly is losing a large, entirely avoidable block of marks. Tell us your Bundesland on WhatsApp and we will tell you which parts your child's paper actually contains before you book anything.
English, board by board

Every English paper we tutor — across Germany

"English" is not one qualification. It is at least seven, and they reward different things. A student can be excellent at one and struggle badly at another, which is why tutors are assigned to the paper rather than to the language.

And the language schools and marketplaces? Search for an English tutor in Germany and you will mostly find two things: people teaching English as a foreign language, and people advertising for TEFL work. Both are legitimate; neither is what an Englisch Leistungskurs student needs. Superprof and Nachhilfeunterricht.de list tutors from roughly €13–30 an hour, and what you are buying there is a contact detail — you vet the tutor, you verify that they have actually marked an English paper, you chase the no-shows. Cheaper per hour is not cheaper per grade: ten hours of conversation practice will not move a mark that is being lost on task fulfilment, right up until results day. We would rather sell you fewer, better hours, which is exactly why every one of ours is refundable.

Competitor figures are those providers' own published rates as at July 2026, converted to a 60-minute hour for comparison. They are directional benchmarks, not quotes — check each provider's current pricing before you decide.

Simple from the start

How English tutoring in Germany works with Rundil

Three steps from enquiry to a tutor reading your child's last marked Klausur — usually inside 48 to 72 hours.

1

Tell us which English

Abitur Englisch LK or GK, IGCSE First Language, Second Language or Literature, IB English A or B, or a certificate with a deadline. Two minutes on the booking form, and no registration fee.

2

We assign your specialist

A degree-qualified tutor for that exact paper — typically within 48–72 hours — with the name and schedule confirmed by WhatsApp. Not a language teacher, unless a language teacher is what you asked for.

3

Read the marks, then move them

Session one starts with the last marked paper and finds where the marks actually went. From there it is analyse, write, mark, repeat — with every session refundable if it falls short.

Built around your family

Who we tutor in English across Germany

Four very different students, one shared problem: everybody assumes English is the easy subject, and the mark on the paper says otherwise.

The bilingual child with a bad Englisch mark

Speaks it at home, watches everything in it, and still comes back with a 9. Nothing is wrong with the English. What is missing is analysis, register and doing what the Operator asked — all of which are teachable in weeks.

Englisch Leistungskurs candidates

Two years of Kursstufe marks feeding into the Gesamtqualifikation, then a written paper and possibly an oral. Sprachmittlung is usually the fastest available gain, and almost nobody has been taught it properly.

IGCSE and IB English students

First Language or Second Language, Literature or Language and Literature, English A or English B. The choice made in Year 10 or Year 11 has consequences that surface at university application, and it is worth getting right.

Certificate candidates with a deadline

IELTS, TOEFL iBT or Cambridge C1 Advanced for a university place, a scholarship or an employer. A fixed test date, a required score set by the institution, and a very specific set of techniques that raise it.

English rewards early starts more than most subjects. Analysis and register are habits, and habits take terms rather than weeks — which is one reason 95% of the students who joined us before September achieved their target grades by May. Families who arrive in February are not buying a different service; they are buying less of it, under more pressure. Figures above use the €68 Experienced tier; Conversational Languages is €58 and Most Accomplished €83, and there is no VAT on any of them. Every session is refundable in full, so a plan that turns out to be wrong costs you nothing to change.

Moving between the IB and the Abitur mid-school? English is usually the subject that survives the move least well, because the two systems reward opposite instincts: the German paper wants a controlled argument built to a command term, while the IB wants an interpretive line defended from the text. Students who transfer often keep their fluency and lose two grades. Tell us the school and the year group on WhatsApp and we will tell you exactly which English paper your child is being examined against.
    The German curriculum landscape

The international schools whose English students we tutor

Germany has 78 IB World Schools, 76 of them authorised for the Diploma Programme, alongside British and American-curriculum schools. These are the ones our students actually attend, with the programmes each school genuinely offers — which matters for English more than for any other subject, because IGCSE English, MYP Language and Literature and IB English A are three different jobs for a tutor.

Programmes listed are each school's own published curricula, checked against the school's website, and are shown to help you identify which English examination your child sits — note that several schools people assume are A-Level schools in fact run IGCSE into the IB Diploma. If your child is at one of the IGCSE schools above, it is worth confirming in writing whether they are entered for English as a First Language or as a Second Language before Year 11 begins. Rundil is an independent tutoring service and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or partnered with any school named here. Tutoring is also available for students at any other school in Germany, state or international.
    Seven exams, one word

Which English exam your child is actually sitting

Families routinely tell us "she does English" and then discover, sometimes in Year 12, that the paper in front of her is not the one they assumed. These are the seven that matter in Germany, what each one really measures, the task that catches students out, and where tutoring moves the mark.

Exam or courseWhat it actually assessesThe task that catches students outWhere tutoring changes the mark
Abitur Englisch — Leistungskurs & GrundkursMost requestedAnalytical writing on an unseen text, pitched across a band between CEFR B2 and C1 for both course types. The Leistungskurs differs in depth, independence and writing time rather than in language level.Sprachmittlung. It is not translation, and students who treat it as translation lose marks on every criterion at once — selection, purpose, audience and register.Operator-by-operator drilling, paragraph architecture, and full timed papers marked to your school's Erwartungshorizont.
IGCSE English as a First LanguageReading for inference and writer's effect, plus directed writing to a specified audience, purpose and form. Graded on the assumption that English is the candidate's strongest language.Directed writing that answers the topic but ignores the form. A speech that reads like an essay is capped no matter how good the prose is.Form and register practice against real tasks, and rebuilding reading answers around inference instead of retelling.
IGCSE English as a Second LanguageComprehension, note-making, summary and functional writing at a lower demand, with listening assessed. Syllabus 0510 reports speaking separately; 0511 counts it into the grade.Choosing it. It is the gentler route to a good letter grade, and in several Bundesländer it is not accepted where First Language is.Where the student can realistically cope, moving them onto First Language early — and if not, maximising summary and listening technique.
IGCSE Literature in EnglishClose reading of set poetry, prose and drama, plus an unseen paper. Marks follow interpretation supported by precise textual evidence. The unseen. There is nothing to revise, so students who have only memorised set-text notes have no method when the paper is unfamiliar.A repeatable method for unseen texts, and teaching quotation as evidence for an argument rather than decoration.
IB English A: Language and LiteratureGuided analysis of an unseen text (SL 1 hour 15 with guiding questions; HL 2 hours 15 on two texts with none), a closed-book comparative essay of 1 hour 45, an Individual Oral, and at HL a 1,200–1,500 word essay.Paper 2. It is closed book, comparative, and answered from memory — students who know both works well still fail to build a line of argument across them.Building a global issue that genuinely holds for the Individual Oral, and rehearsing Paper 2 comparisons until the structure is automatic.
IB English BLanguage acquisition: a productive writing paper (250–400 words at SL, 450–600 at HL), a listening and reading paper, and an Individual Oral. SL is pitched around B2, HL around C1.The HL Individual Oral, which is built on an extract from one of two literary works — not on a photograph as at SL. Students who prepared for the SL format arrive with the wrong skill.Text-type conventions for Paper 1, listening at genuine speed, and literary extract work for the HL oral.
IELTS · TOEFL iBT · Cambridge C1 & C2General proficiency against the CEFR rather than a school syllabus. C1 Advanced certifies C1 and C2 Proficiency certifies C2; IELTS reports a band, and its own guidance places the C1 threshold between bands 6.5 and 7, with 8.5 and above recognised as C2.Assuming a required score exists nationally. It does not — every university, faculty and employer sets its own, and they differ within the same institution.Test-specific technique: task response, timing, and the writing and speaking criteria, which is where fluent candidates lose the most.
The English as a Second Language trap is real, and it is decided years early. Cambridge's own recognition guidance for Germany records that several Bundesländer — Bavaria, Brandenburg, Hesse, Lower Saxony and Saxony among them — accept IGCSE English as a First Language but explicitly do not accept IGCSE English as a Second Language or other English-as-a-foreign-language qualifications when assessing equivalence. The general expectation is five IGCSEs at grade C or above covering two languages, mathematics, a science and a social science, and Saxony-Anhalt asks for eight subjects. Requirements are set state by state and do change, so confirm yours with the relevant authority — but do it before your child is entered, not after.

Why fluency and a good mark are different things

    • What fluency provesComprehension and speed
    • What the paper marksAnalysis and task fulfilment
    • Commonest lost marksWrong Operator answered
    • Second commonestRegister wrong for the text type
    • ThirdAssertion without textual evidence
    • Typical time to fix8–12 weeks

None of these are language problems, which is why a language school cannot solve them and why a native-speaker conversation partner will not either. They are examination-technique problems dressed up as English problems, and they respond quickly to being named.

What the certificates are, and are not, worth

A Cambridge C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency certificate does not expire, states a CEFR level directly, and is widely understood by German employers. IELTS and TOEFL iBT report a score rather than a level, and both are commonly asked for by English-taught degree programmes. What none of them do is guarantee anything: the required score is set by the individual university, faculty or employer, and two departments in the same building can ask for different things.

For a German school pupil, the honest order of priority is usually this: the Englisch mark on the Abitur Zeugnis first, because it is the one that feeds the Gesamtqualifikation and cannot be retaken casually; the certificate second, only once you know a specific programme is asking for it. Sitting IELTS in Year 11 because it feels productive is a common and expensive detour.

Where a certificate genuinely is required, it is one of the most tutorable things in this whole list — the format is fixed, the criteria are published, and six to eight weeks of focused work moves most candidates meaningfully.

    Guarantee & flexibility

Refundable, reassignable & never locked in

Two promises, written down rather than implied — because the two things families fear most about Nachhilfe are paying for hours that did nothing and being stuck in an agreement they cannot leave.

    The satisfaction guarantee

A full refund is available after any session if the student requests it. There are no conditions and no asterisks, and it is not limited to the first lesson — satisfaction is guaranteed on every session, in Germany, Switzerland and the Netherlands, across every curriculum and every English paper.

The refund is requested in one message, by WhatsApp, by email or through your account. Nobody is asked to justify it, sit through a retention call, or have an awkward conversation with the tutor; we handle that end. In English in particular this matters, because progress is slower to see than in maths — you should never be paying on faith for a term to find out.

English tutoring in Germany: your questions answered

Why does my bilingual child get bad marks in Englisch?
Because the Englisch paper does not mark fluency. It marks textual analysis, register, essay structure and whether the answer did what the Operator instructed. A student who speaks English at home can read the text perfectly and still write a summary where an analysis was asked for, or an essay where a speech was asked for. Add Sprachmittlung, which almost no bilingual child has ever been taught, and a genuinely fluent fifteen-year-old can sit in an Englisch Leistungskurs collecting nines. It is an examination-technique problem wearing an English costume, and it usually responds within a term.
Is this English tutoring or English language lessons?
Academic English tutoring — English as an examined school subject. We prepare students for Abitur Englisch, IGCSE English, IB English A and B, A-Level English and the IELTS, TOEFL and Cambridge certificates. We are not a language school, we do not teach English as a foreign language to adults starting from scratch, and we do not run conversation clubs. Practical spoken English for everyday use does exist as our Conversational Languages tier at €58 an hour, but it is a different product from exam preparation and we will tell you which one you actually need.
What is Sprachmittlung in the Abitur Englisch exam?
Sprachmittlung, or mediation, is the distinctively German task: the student is given German source material and has to convey its relevant content in English for a stated audience and purpose — as an email, a report, an article. It is not translation. Marks go on selecting what that reader actually needs, on register, and on making it work as a piece of communication, and a word-for-word rendering scores badly on all three. Where a state sets it as a separate part of the paper it can carry a large share of the total: in Berlin and Brandenburg it is weighted at 30% of the written Englisch Abitur with a fixed 60 minutes for it. It is the single most improvable component we see.
What are Operatoren, and why do they cost marks in Englisch?
Operatoren are the command verbs that open every task — outline, analyse, examine, compare, comment on, assess, evaluate. Each one has a published definition, and the Erwartungshorizont rewards the operation that verb names, not the topic it mentions. North Rhine-Westphalia's official list groups them for integrated reading and writing, for Sprachmittlung and for listening comprehension, and notes that any operator can be set at any of the three Anforderungsbereiche. Most avoidable marks in Englisch are lost here: the student writes a good answer to a question that was not asked.
What is the difference between Englisch Leistungskurs and Grundkurs?
Less than families expect on language level and more than they expect on everything else. The KMK's Einheitliche Prüfungsanforderungen pitch both course types across a band between CEFR B2 and C1. What separates them is depth of textual work, the degree of independence expected, the range of material covered across the Kursstufe, and writing time — in Berlin and Brandenburg the Leistungskurs paper runs 285 minutes against 255 for the Grundkurs. A Leistungskurs answer is expected to sustain an argument that a Grundkurs answer may only open.
How is the written Abitur Englisch exam structured?
A text task sits at the centre — comprehension of an unseen text, analysis of how it works, and then a comment, an Erörterung or a creative re-working. The KMK framework allows that core to be supplemented by up to two further elements: a Sprachmittlung task, a listening or viewing comprehension task, and an oral component. Which combination appears depends on your Bundesland, and so does the timing: Berlin and Brandenburg, for example, run 195 minutes of writing plus 60 minutes of mediation at Grundkurs and 225 plus 60 at Leistungskurs, with a choice between two proposals in each part. We plan revision against your own state's format rather than a national average.
How much does Englisch count towards the Abitur?
The Abitur is a 900-point Gesamtqualifikation: up to 600 points from Qualifikationsphase coursework across Leistungs- and Grundkurse, and up to 300 from the final examinations. Englisch contributes through every Kursstufe half-year it is taken, and again through the final paper if it is one of the examined subjects. That structure is why English marks cannot be rescued in the last eight weeks the way a single Klausur can — two years of half-year grades are already banked. It is also why starting in the first Kurshalbjahr is worth so much more than starting in the last.
Should my child take IGCSE English as a First Language or as a Second Language?
First Language, wherever the child can realistically cope with it. First Language English assumes English is the candidate's strongest language and assesses reading for inference, writer's effect and directed writing. English as a Second Language assesses comprehension, note-making, summary and functional writing at a lower demand, with listening included; syllabus 0510 reports speaking separately while 0511 counts it into the grade. Second Language is the easier route to a good letter grade, and that is precisely the problem — the grade is not read the same way afterwards. Where a student genuinely is not ready, we work to move them across before entries are made.
Do German states accept IGCSE English as a Second Language?
Several explicitly do not. Cambridge's own recognition guidance for Germany records that Bavaria, Brandenburg, Hesse, Lower Saxony and Saxony accept IGCSE English as a First Language but not IGCSE English as a Second Language or other English-as-a-foreign-language qualifications when assessing equivalence. The general expectation is five IGCSEs at grade C or above covering two languages, mathematics, a science and a social science, with Saxony-Anhalt asking for eight subjects and Thuringia allowing grade E in additional elective subjects. Requirements are set state by state and do change, so confirm your own with the relevant authority — but do it before entries, not after results.
Is IGCSE Literature in English worth taking?
For a student heading towards IB English A, A-Level English or any humanities degree, yes — it is the closest thing to a rehearsal. Literature in English assesses close reading of set poetry, prose and drama alongside an unseen paper, and the marks follow interpretation supported by precise textual evidence rather than plot recall. The component that catches students out is the unseen, because there is nothing to revise: a candidate who has only memorised set-text notes has no method when the passage is unfamiliar. That method is teachable, and it is most of what tutoring adds here.
IB English A or IB English B — which one should my child take?
English A is a Group 1 studies-in-language-and-literature course for students working in their strongest language: unseen textual analysis, a closed-book comparative essay, an Individual Oral, and at Higher Level a 1,200–1,500 word essay. English B is a Group 2 language-acquisition course: a productive writing paper, a listening and reading paper, and an Individual Oral, with SL pitched around CEFR B2 and HL around C1. English B HL is demanding and respected, but it is a language course; English A is a literature and language course. Where a student can manage English A, it usually reads better for university, and it is the harder one to switch into later.
What is the difference between IB English A at Higher Level and Standard Level?
Paper 1 is where the gap shows. At Standard Level it is 1 hour 15 minutes on one text, with guiding questions provided. At Higher Level it is 2 hours 15 minutes on two texts, with no guiding questions at all — the candidate has to find the analytical line unaided. Paper 2 is 1 hour 45 and closed book at both levels. Higher Level also carries the HL Essay, an independently framed 1,200–1,500 word piece submitted for external assessment, and more works are studied across the course. Standard Level is not a lighter version of the same paper; it is a different task.
What catches students out in the IB English B Individual Oral?
The Higher Level format. At Standard Level the Individual Oral is built on a visual stimulus linked to one of the five prescribed themes, and then opens into discussion. At Higher Level it is built on an extract from one of the two literary works studied during the course, before widening to the themes. Students who prepared using SL material — and there is a great deal more of it online — arrive having practised the wrong skill entirely. We rehearse the correct format from the start, with real extracts and timed responses.
Which English certificate do German universities accept — IELTS, TOEFL or Cambridge?
All three are widely accepted, and there is no national requirement — the score is set by the individual university, and often by the individual faculty or programme. Two English-taught master's courses in the same building can ask for different things. Cambridge C1 Advanced and C2 Proficiency state a CEFR level directly and do not expire; IELTS and TOEFL iBT report a score. Before paying for any of them, find the specific programme page and read what it asks for. If your child holds the Abitur with Englisch taken through the Oberstufe, some German-taught programmes will not require a certificate at all.
What IELTS band is a C1 on the CEFR scale?
IELTS' own guidance places the C1 threshold between bands 6.5 and 7, noting that many candidates at 6.5 are at C1 while some are marginally below, and that band 8.5 and above is recognised as C2 with band 8 borderline. Band 6 sits around B2. IELTS is explicit that its bands were never designed to align exactly with the CEFR transition points and that institutions should read the band descriptors rather than rely on a conversion chart. Cambridge C1 Advanced and C2 Proficiency avoid the question by certifying the level itself.
Are your English lessons taught in English or in German?
Whichever gets the mark up. For IGCSE, IB and A-Level English the session runs in English, because the exam does. For Abitur Englisch we teach in English but explain in German wherever a concept lands faster that way — and Sprachmittlung has to be worked in both languages by definition, since the source is German and the output is English. Younger students and those rebuilding foundations often start more in German and shift across. Tell us on the booking form which your child is more comfortable in, and the tutor will be assigned accordingly.
How much does English tutoring in Germany cost?
Rundil charges €58, €68 or €83 per 60-minute hour, with no VAT added. Conversational Languages is €58 and covers practical spoken English rather than exam work; Experienced Tutors at €68 cover Englisch in the Oberstufe and MSA, IGCSE English, IB English B and MYP Language and Literature; Most Accomplished Tutors at €83 cover Englisch Leistungskurs, IB English A at Higher Level, IGCSE Literature in English and the IELTS, TOEFL and Cambridge certificates. A standard 1.5-hour session is therefore €87 to €124.50. Tutoring is VAT-exempt in Germany, so the rate quoted is the rate on your invoice.
How quickly is an English tutor assigned?
Typically within 48 to 72 hours of your booking form. Faster is sometimes possible but is never guaranteed, and we would rather take the extra day than send a language teacher to an Englisch Leistungskurs student. Once the tutor is assigned we confirm the name, schedule and contact details by WhatsApp. It helps a great deal if you can tell us the exact paper — Abitur Englisch LK or GK, IGCSE 0500 or 0510, IB English A or B — and send the last marked piece of written work.
How many hours of English tutoring will my child need?
For one recurring weakness such as Sprachmittlung, one session a week for four to six weeks. For lifting Englisch by a full grade, one session a week for eight to twelve weeks is the commonest pattern. A full Englisch Leistungskurs year or an IB English A course usually runs one to two sessions a week across four to six months, and a certificate with a fixed test date typically takes two sessions a week for six to eight weeks. The honest headline is that starting early costs less: 95% of the students who joined us before September achieved their target grades by May.
Is there a contract, and can I get a refund?
There is no subscription, no registration fee, no setup fee and no minimum term, and nothing to cancel before a notice deadline. A full refund is available after any session if the student requests it — no conditions, no asterisks, and not limited to the first lesson. If the tutor is not the right fit going forward we reassign at no cost. Cancellation is free until 17:00 the day before a session. Billing is either the Tutoring Plan, monthly in advance with no admin fee, or Flexi, billed at the end of the month on hours actually taken with a 12% admin fee.

English tutoring in Germany, for the paper your child is actually sitting

Rundil provides one-to-one English tutoring across Germany for English as an examined school subject. That is a narrower promise than most search results in this market make, and deliberately so: type "English tutor Germany" into a search engine and you will be offered language schools, conversation partners and adverts recruiting English teachers. None of those help a student whose Englisch Klausur came back with a 9 attached to a comment about task fulfilment.

The work here is analysis, not vocabulary. A German Englisch paper wants an unseen text taken apart, an argument built to the command term, and a mediation task handled for a stated reader. An IGCSE paper wants directed writing that obeys its form. An IB Paper 1 wants an interpretive line found without guiding questions at Higher Level. These reward different instincts, and a tutor who has only taught one of them will teach the wrong habit into the others. You tell us the school, the board and the exact paper; we assign a degree-qualified specialist for it, typically within 48 to 72 hours, and confirm the name by WhatsApp.

Why the fluent students are often the ones who need us

The single most common enquiry we receive on this subject begins with some version of "she is completely bilingual and she is getting a 9". It is not a contradiction. Fluency gets a student through the reading in half the time and then abandons them at the point where marks are awarded — for naming what a device does rather than that it exists, for holding a register across four hundred words, for answering analyse with analysis. Those are learnable in weeks once somebody names them, which is why the same students often move fastest.

It is also why every session is refundable in full if the student asks. English progress is genuinely hard for a parent to see from the outside; you should not have to pay on faith for a term to find out whether it worked.

One price, sixty real minutes, no VAT and nothing to cancel

Rundil charges €58, €68 or €83 per full 60-minute hour whether the tutor sits at your kitchen table in Bogenhausen or joins from a screen in Leipzig, because the preparation behind the hour does not change. Tutoring is VAT-exempt in Germany, so nothing is added at the end. There is no subscription, no registration fee, no setup fee and no minimum term: add hours in the eight weeks before the Englisch Abiturprüfung, pause them over the Sommerferien, stop altogether in July. Free cancellation runs until 17:00 the day before any session, and on Flexi you pay only for the hours actually completed. Families across Berlin, Munich, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Düsseldorf, Cologne and Stuttgart come to us because the marking criteria are the point — and everything else stays out of the way.
