Abitur tutoring in Germany, at a glance

The thing most families discover too late is that the Abitur is two thirds coursework. The Gesamtqualifikation runs to 900 points: up to 600 come from Halbjahresergebnisse accumulated across the Qualifikationsphase, and only 300 from the four final examinations. By the time the April papers arrive, most of the grade already exists. That is also why we are unusual in this market: the German Nachhilfe chains own the Abitur but teach it only in German on multi-year agreements, and the international agencies teach in English but do not cover the Abitur at all. We do both. 95% of the students who joined us before September achieved their target grades by May.

The Abitur is two years long, and mostly already decided
Almost every conversation we have about the Abitur starts in the wrong place — the written examinations. Those are Block II, and they are worth 300 points out of 900. Block I, the coursework from the Qualifikationsphase, is worth twice as much and has been accumulating since the start of year 11 or 12. A student who arrives in February of the final year asking for exam preparation is asking us to move the smaller number. It can be done, and we do it. But the families who get the result they wanted are almost always the ones who understood the arithmetic a year earlier.
Block I is where the grade is built
Up to 600 of the 900 points come from Halbjahresergebnisse accumulated over the Qualifikationsphase, against a minimum of 200 and a rule that no more than a fifth may fall below 5 points. Tutoring that starts in the second half of the final year is working on a third of the total. Tutoring that starts in the first Halbjahr is working on all of it.
In English or in German, whichever works
Bilingual and international-school students sitting the Abitur are badly served by this market: the Nachhilfe chains teach in German only, and the English-language agencies do not cover the Abitur. Our tutors work in either language, and frequently switch inside a session — the subject in German because that is what the Erwartungshorizont expects, the explanation in English because that is where the student thinks.
Your state, not a national average
Sixteen states, sixteen sets of papers, sixteen exam calendars — drawing on the KMK's shared Aufgabenpool but not identical to it. Bavaria examines later than Hessen; NRW's first regular G9 cohort sits in 2027; Hamburg is still G8. We plan the runway from your state's published window.
No 24-month agreement
The national institutes sell 6, 12 and 24-month agreements with registration and setup fees on top, and notice periods that outlast the exam. We have none of that. Add hours before the Klausuren, pause over the summer, stop the week the papers finish.

The 900-point Gesamtqualifikation, decoded
This is the part of the German system almost nobody explains to families in English, and it is the part that decides where tutoring is worth buying. The Abitur grade is arithmetic, and the arithmetic is public.

The KMK publishes a fixed conversion from the 900-point Gesamtqualifikation to the Abiturnote, running in 18-point steps of 0.1 from 4.0 at 300 points up to 1.0. This is the whole table. There is no rounding and no discretion in it: the points determine the grade.

Gymnasium families in the Qualifikationsphase
One Leistungskurs has gone wrong and Block I is already banking points. This is the most valuable moment to intervene and the one families most often skip, because nothing has visibly failed yet — the report still says 4, the Abitur is eighteen months away, and the points are quietly accumulating in the wrong direction.
Bilingual and international-school students sitting the Abitur
The subject has to be answered in German to a German Erwartungshorizont, but the thinking happens in English. Almost nobody in this market covers both ends. We do, and it is usually the reason families find us.
Families arriving from another Bundesland — or another country
A move between states mid-Oberstufe means a different Kurssystem, a different Einbringung rule and a different exam window; a move from abroad often means a written examination in a second language for the first time.
Final-year students in the eight weeks before the papers
Late, and we will say so honestly: Block II is 300 of 900 points. What late intervention does well is exam technique, Operatoren discipline and timed past papers against the real Erwartungshorizont — which is worth real points, just not all of them.

Which Bundesland examines when — and for how long
The move back from eight-year to nine-year Gymnasien has left neighbouring states on genuinely different timetables, and a revision plan written for the wrong one is worse than no plan. These are the positions we can confirm from official sources; where a state's arrangements are in flux we say so rather than guess.

What an IB score is worth as an Abiturnote
Some of our Abitur students have a sibling in the IB, and some are choosing between the two. Both groups get told the same wrong thing: that a particular German university "wants 38 points". No German university publishes an IB cut-off. Here is the official conversion between the two systems, and what it actually buys.

A single grade 3 can be compensated by a 5 or better in another subject at the same or higher level, provided the total still reaches 24. The subject combination matters more than the headline number: at least one of the three Higher Level subjects must be a language, mathematics or a science, and taking mathematics only at Standard Level can restrict a student to subject-bound admission rather than general university entrance — a Year 11 decision that quietly closes doors in Year 13.
Why there is no published cut-off
German universities do not set an IB threshold. For oversubscribed subjects they rank every applicant by converted grade average and admit downwards until the places are gone — the grade of the last student admitted becomes that semester's Numerus Clausus. It is a result, not a requirement, and it moves every single intake. The universities that publish previous years' figures attach an explicit warning against using them to predict anything.
Applicants holding a foreign-acquired qualification are handled separately again — the Abiturbestenquote is split into sixteen Land quotas, and holders of a foreign qualification are allocated to one of them by lot. So the honest answer to "what score do I need" is: the highest one your child can reasonably reach, because the bar is set by whoever else applies that year.
What we can tell you is where the leverage sits. Two points is a third of a grade, and points are far easier to add in Year 12 than in the last eight weeks of Year 13 — which is why we push families to start the Diploma years with support rather than rescue them at the end of it.

Why this page exists at all
The German tutoring market has split cleanly in two, and neither half serves the families in the middle. On one side are the national Nachhilfe institutes and the big online platform: they own the Abitur, they have branches in almost every town, and they teach in German on six, twelve and twenty-four-month agreements with registration and setup fees on top. On the other side are the international-curriculum agencies: they teach in English, they know the IB Diploma and the A-Level inside out, they charge up to twice our top rate, and they do not cover the Abitur at all. A bilingual family in Munich, an international-school student who transferred into a Gymnasium in year 10, an expatriate household whose child now sits a Deutsch Leistungskurs — all of them fall between the two. That gap is what this page is for.
The arithmetic that should decide when you buy tutoring
The Abitur is a 900-point Gesamtqualifikation. Block I — the Halbjahresergebnisse accumulated across the Qualifikationsphase, at least 36 of them — carries up to 600 points, with a minimum of 200, a rule that no more than a fifth may fall below 5 points, and an absolute prohibition on any counted result scoring 0. Block II, the four final examinations, carries up to 300, with a minimum of 100. The total converts to the Abiturnote on a fixed public scale: 823 points and above is 1.0, every 18 points below that is another 0.1, and 300 points is exactly 4.0. Two consequences follow. First, by the time the written papers arrive, two thirds of the grade already exists — which is why late exam-preparation tutoring, however good, is working on the smaller number. Second, because 18 points is a tenth of a grade, the distance between the result a student is heading for and the one they wanted is usually smaller and more winnable than it feels in March.
Sixteen states, sixteen sets of papers
There is no national Abitur. Each state writes its own examinations, drawing on the KMK's shared Aufgabenpool without being identical to it, sets its own window, and applies its own rules about which course results are compulsory in Block I. Bavaria's first regular nine-year cohort sits in 2026; North Rhine-Westphalia's follows in 2027; Lower Saxony has examined G9 cohorts since 2021; Hessen leaves the choice to each individual school; Hamburg Gymnasien remain eight-year. A tutor who prepares a Bavarian student to a North Rhine-Westphalian Erwartungshorizont is doing careful work on the wrong target.
